Day 2
I never book an activity for our first full day on a vacation, just in case of flight delays. This meant we had a free day to explore on our own.

After breakfast, we walked down to the beach and then turned left. We walked as far as we could to the end of the beach, where we found a tiny river and some mangrove trees.

The resort was quite large- there were several buildings sprawled over a fairly large property. There didn’t seem to be many people staying there though. We didn’t see anybody else walking the beach.

We wandered around for a bit and then headed back to the resort.

We hopped into our car to drive around to see some different beaches in the area. We had a brief delay because we had to stop and get out of the car to encourage a large Iguana to get off the road.

Our first stop was Playa Coyotera. It was a fairly long beach and there was not a person in sight.

We walked all the way down in one direction and then came back and continued the other way. Up on the small hill we noticed a small resort that looked to be abandoned.

At the other end there was a large area with fairly flat rock. One of our favourite things to do is to climb on the rocks and see how far we can go. Although I’m mostly interested in mammals, I enjoy seeing the variety of birds that live in Costa Rica.

These American Oystercatchers are about the size of a crow. Because they feed in salty water, they have special glands near their eyes that remove any excess salt from their blood.

We had hoped to borrow one of the resorts’ kayaks to explore the island in the bay, but the ocean was too rough.

There were lots of interesting rock formations here. After some rock hopping, we headed back to check out another beach.

Our next stop was Playa Cocos. It was smaller but very pretty. We climbed over some of the rocks on one side. We saw a couple of locals here fishing along with a small child and dog.

We headed back to the hotel and had a brief dip in the pool. Unfortunately the water was very cold and it was still too windy to stay in the water.

For lunch we shared a double burger and fries, and then spent some time reading on our patio.
Later we wandered down the beach in the opposite direction from our morning walk. The tide was out, so we could walk quite far out.

We spent the rest of the day reading and then enjoyed a dinner of Beef Tenderloin with veggies and potatoes. They had a live D.J. there, so Mike asked them to play a song by Theory of a Deadman, our favourite band.
